- ABOUT HB -

A practice built on real expertise and the way work should actually feel.

HB Financial Group exists because there's a meaningful difference between someone who fills out a tax return and someone who understands your whole financial picture — and most people deserve the latter.

Founded by Melissa Griffin, EA. Built in Knoxville, Tennessee. Designed for the people who are tired of being treated like a transaction.

Melissa Griffin, EA, CAA.

- Founder, HB Financial Group

I'm Melissa. I'm an Enrolled Agent — the highest credential the IRS issues — and a Certified Acceptance Agent, which means I can handle ITIN applications and other immigration tax matters directly. I've been working in tax and financial services for over a decade, and I've trained more than 100 tax preparers along the way.

I'm also a mother of three, a woman entrepreneur, and a small business owner. I know what it feels like to juggle the bookkeeping, the kids' schedules, the IRS notice that came in the mail, the client work, the dinner that still needs to happen — all at the same time. That isn't a side note about who I am. It's the foundation of how I think about my clients.

I built HB because I noticed something: people kept coming to me after working with someone else, frustrated that they'd been treated like a file rather than a person. They'd been quoted the cheapest price, given the fastest service, and then left to figure out the rest on their own. That isn't real financial work. That's transaction processing.

HB is a practice — not a tax mill, not a one-off service. Everything here is built around the idea that financial work should be done with care, with rigor, and with respect for the person across the table.

- THE STORY -

Why HB exists the way it does.

The short version: I built the firm I wished existed when I was trying to figure out my own finances years ago.

The problem with most financial services.

I've spent years watching capable, hardworking people get the wrong kind of help with their finances. Either they hired someone too cheap who didn't actually look at their situation, or they hired someone too expensive who treated their work as one piece in a much larger machine.

Neither model serves real people. The first one undercuts the work. The second one undercuts the relationship.

I know what it's like to juggle it all.

When a client tells me they're behind on their bookkeeping because life happened — kids, family responsibilities, the business growing faster than the systems can keep up — I don't have to imagine what they mean. I'm running my own business while raising three kids. I know what it's like to look at a stack of receipts at 9pm after everyone else is asleep, knowing tomorrow will start before you're ready for it.

That perspective shapes everything about how HB works. We don't treat our clients like they should have it all figured out. We treat them like real people running real lives, who deserve a financial partner that understands what they're actually carrying.

"Most people need someone who's genuinely curious about their situation, takes the work seriously, and stays involved across the year — not just at filing time."

The financial partner you call first.

Most people running a business hire piecemeal — a tax person, a bookkeeper, a credit specialist, a notary, a CRM consultant. Each one looks at their slice of the work. None of them sees the whole picture. And when something comes up that doesn't fit neatly into one of their boxes, you're left figuring out who to call.

HB is structured to be the financial partner you call first. Not your tax preparer. Not your bookkeeper. The person who understands enough of your tax position, your books, your credit profile, your business strategy, and your filings to actually advise you on what to do next — and who can either handle it directly or coordinate with the right specialist when something more complex is needed. Part fractional CFO, part strategist, part executor. Whatever the situation calls for.

That kind of partnership requires real depth on our end. It's why we work with a limited number of clients. Being the first-call partner to many people isn't possible. Being the first-call partner to the right number of people is the entire point.

What I built instead.

HB is structured around four integrated pillars — tax strategy, bookkeeping, business infrastructure, and credit work. They share information. They serve the same client. That coordination is where most of the value lives.

It's also a practice with real capacity limits. I cap the engagement-level work because that's the only way to deliver the kind of service I committed to building. That means saying no sometimes. It means honest fit conversations before someone enrolls. It means the relationship matters more than the headcount.

Why Knoxville.

I'm a Tennessee native and I built HB here on purpose. There's something to be said for a firm that knows the local landscape — the tax climate, the small business community, the unique situations that come up in our region. When a client in East Tennessee asks about something specific to our state or our area, they're not getting a generic answer.

That said, HB serves clients throughout the country. The Knoxville roots inform how we work — but the work itself happens wherever the client lives.

- WHAT WE HOLD TO -

The principles that shape the work.

These aren't slogans. They're the rules I built the firm around - the lines I won't cross, even when crossing them would be easier.

- No. 01

Honesty over upsell.

If your situation doesn't need the bigger engagement, we'll tell you. Real consulting means recommending less when less is right — even when it costs us revenue. The relationship is worth more than any single sale.

- No. 03

Coordination over silos.

Your tax preparer shouldn't be a different person from your bookkeeper from your business advisor from your credit specialist. When the work is coordinated, the result is better. That's why HB does it under one roof.

- No. 05

The work, not the spectacle.

We're not interested in being the loudest tax practice on social media. We're interested in being the practice that quietly does the best work for our clients. The recognition follows. The relationships are forever.

- No. 02

Capacity over volume.

We cap our engagement-level work because that's the only way to actually deliver what we promise. Most firms grow by adding clients. We grow by going deeper with the right ones. It's a different business model — and it produces a different kind of result.

- No. 04

Real expertise not credentials theater.

The credentials matter — EA, CAA, IRS-Approved CE Provider — because they represent real expertise. But they're not the point. The point is doing the work with the rigor those credentials demand. Anyone can put letters after their name. Few people earn them through real practice.

- No. 06

Tennessee roots, national reach.

Built in Knoxville. Serving clients nationwide. The local roots inform how we work — careful, neighborly, genuinely invested in our community. The reach means we can serve clients wherever they are.

Every engagement, regardless of which door you walk through, follows a structured process designed for clarity and momentum.

- HOW WE WORK -

Honest about how we operate.

HB is run by a working mother of three. That shapes our schedule and our approach in ways we want clients to know upfront — because it's part of what makes the work feel different.

Outside of tax season, we work primarily by appointment. Our hours are flexible by design — we believe the people we serve deserve our full attention during the time they have us, and we believe our team deserves a life outside of business hours too. If you're someone who needs round-the-clock availability or last-minute calendar accommodation, we may not be the right fit. If you're someone who appreciates structured, focused, intentional work with a real person on the other end — you'll feel at home here.

During tax season (mid-January through April), our hours and availability expand significantly to meet client needs. The rest of the year, we operate at a sustainable, focused pace — which is exactly what allows us to bring our full attention to the work when it's tax time.

We work with a limited audience by design. The relationship-based work HB does requires real capacity and real attention. That means we say no to some prospects — not because they aren't valuable, but because we can't be the right partner if we're overextended.

- HOW WE WORK -

It's not just one person.

HB has a small, intentional team. Lead preparers who've trained with HB and bring the same standards to every return. Support staff who keep the practice running with the same level of care we bring to client work.

We're being intentional about scaling. The team grows when adding the right person makes the work better — not when the calendar gets busy. If you're considering a role with HB, we recommend reviewing the Academy and reaching out via our booking page.

- PHILOSOPHY -

What we believe about money and work.

"Money work isn't separate from life work. The way we handle the numbers shapes the way we feel about everything else. That's why doing it carefully matters."

Most financial advice misses a simple truth: clients aren't broken machines that need to be fixed. They're capable people who deserve a real partner in the parts of life that involve money. The job of a good financial practice isn't to make the client feel like they need us — it's to make them more equipped to handle their own life, with us in the background offering real expertise when it's needed.

That's the difference between consulting and selling. Consulting is in service of the client's growth. Selling is in service of the firm's revenue. We choose consulting, even when it's harder. Especially when it's harder.

Want to work together?

Every engagement starts with a real conversation. Tell us what you're working through and we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right fit — and if we're not, who might be.
